Invited Address Session 11 Part 1 from the Evolution of Psychotherapy 1995 – The Therapeutic Power of Attention: Theory and Techniques
Featuring Erving Polster, PhD; with discussant Ernest Rossi, PhD.
Moderated by W Michael Munion, MA.
The focus and re-focus of attention is represented everywhere in psychotherapy; nowhere more pointedly than in hypnosis, meditation and the gestalt concept of concentration. Expanding on these techniques, Dr. Polster offers three options for heightening attention in the ordinary therapeutic relationship: tight therapeutic sequences, the reconstruction of storyline and the spotlighting of selves. Each of these impels attention, helping to create an imbeddedness into previously squandered ingredients of the patient’s life.

Erving has authored 6 books. In his current writings, he offers perspectives and designs for a communal application of psychotherapy principles. Ernest L. Rossi, PhD, is an internationally renowned therapist, teacher and pioneer in the psychobiology of mind-body healing. The author of more than 24 professional books, Dr. Rossi worked with Milton Erickson for eight years and co-authored three classic volumes on therapeutic hypnosis with him. Rossi has also edited four volumes of Erickson’s Collected Papers and four volumes of Erickson’s Seminars, Workshops and Lectures. He has been conducting research in the psychosocial genomics of ultradian rhythms and their relation to mind-body healing and psychotherapy for over three decades.
