Learning Objectives:
1. What are the suicide mortality rates for physicians as compared to the general population?
2. Name two risk factors for physician suicide and two screening tools for suicide prevention.
3. Name three ways to manage risk factors.

The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) designates this live activity for a maximum of .75 AMA PRA Category 1 Creditä.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) and Kansas City University College of Osteopathic Medicine. MAOPS is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Dr. Brandi Norman applies her passion for clinical psychology as a practitioner who specializes in the mental health and well-being of medical students. In her clinical practice, she delivers cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and other evidence-based treatments to adult clients with a wide range of emotional and adjustment problems, such as anxiety, stress, depression, and relationship issues. She provides workshops to students covering topics related to suicide prevention, depression, anxiety, and physician burn-out. She is eager to apply her experience and compassion with clients as they begin to improve their quality of life and attain a sense of fulfillment. 

Dr. Norman received her Master’s in Clinical Psychology with honors from Forest Institute of Professional Psychology where she also earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology. She completed her APA accredited internship at the Robert J. Murney Clinic in Springfield, Missouri and her post-doctoral experience at Burrell Behavioral Health in Springfield, Missouri. While at Burrell Behavioral Health she participated in a study sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health which focused on treatment for Recovery After Initial Schizophrenia Episode (RAISE). In her previous clinical position Dr. Norman maintained a private practice in Greenfield, Missouri where she provided counseling for underserved populations in a rural setting. Dr. Norman was also the team leader for the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program at Ozark Center in Joplin, Missouri. She has extensive experience working with individuals who are persistently suicidal or engaged in self-directed violence.

Most recently, Dr. Norman attended the National Conference on Medical Student Mental Health and Well-being where she invested in workshops on the prevention of medical student suicide and burn-out. Dr. Norman finds work with medical students extremely gratifying. She considers it a privilege to provide counseling to KCU students as they navigate medical school culture and grow into their talents.
