If you play Titus Andronicus, you’re exhausted. You turn around, your daughter’s had her tongue cut out. You turn around and your son’s head has been cut off. Turn around and your brother’s lying in the ground. How much more can I take? As the actor you keep pushing it away. But you know you have to go on that journey. You can’t avoid it. You can’t say, ‘Ah well, I don’t think I’ll do Titus tonight.’ You have to understand the responsibility that comes with the work.
