As soon I got off the stage, I felt absolutely miserable
That period of my life in 2011 (where I competed in 4 different competitions) was the WORST year of my life.
was a living nightmare. I would spend 12-16 weeks dieting and getting into incredible shape, and immediately after the show, I would regain 8-12 pounds of fat inside a week and my lower abs would disappear once again.
All this, despite my world revolving around my workouts, my meals, and my supplements.
I had zero social life as I had to be in bed for 10pm so I could be at the gym bright and early. I was the annoying person, that embarrassed the rest of the table, at the restaurant because it took me 15 minutes to put in an order. I needed to know about every single ingredient in the food, right?
I had mood swings like that of a teenage girl going through puberty. I had food obsessions. I lost my sex drive and stopped waking up with morning wood. And worst of all, it put incredible stress on my marriage.
What I forgot to mention was that 2011 – the year I won my pro card – was also my first year of marriage! It’s supposed to be your honeymoon period where you have sex 6x a week, you’re traveling together and your “love tanks” are always topped off…
…but for us…
I Thought We Were Going To Get Divorced!
Before I sat down to write this letter, I asked my wife, “Do you remember our first year of marriage when I competed 4 times?”
Here’s my wife’s response… and please keep in mind, my wife was very supportive but imagine being in HER position.
Sure, My Pictures From Show Day Looked Amazing, But In A Short 2-3 Week Period I Reversed 16 Weeks Of Fat Loss!
Here was the big problem with my approach to getting lean: It was EXTREME.
This is where my favorite quote was born: Extreme measures lead to extreme disappointment.
By taking such hardcore measures to get ready for a show, I taught myself to only get ripped using extremes, which resulted in bodyfat supercompensation accumulation we discussed at the start.
I didn’t know about that research at the time.
