Learning Objectives:
1. State the importance of considering and ruling out secondary presentations of psychiatric pathology before considering the primary presentation of psychiatric pathology.
2. Understand the differential diagnosis of “manic-like” behavior arising out of both medical and drug-related causes (secondary psychiatric pathologies) as well as those primary psychiatric pathologies which can present with “manic-like” behavior.
3. Understand the differential diagnosis of “manic-like” behavior arising out of both medical and drug-related causes (secondary psychiatric pathologies) as well as those primary psychiatric pathologies which can present with “manic-like” behavior.
4. Understand how to rule-in and rule-out key disorders and presentation of “manic-like” behavior.
5. Understand broad treatment strategies to control manic-like behavior, be it arising from a primary or a secondary psychiatric cause.
6. Differentiate the various types of bipolar disorders, and relate this to the presentation of borderline personality disorder.

The Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. Dr. Smith is an Associate Professor and Chief of Psychiatry at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and a Founding Psychiatry Residency Program Director at Portsmouth Regional Hospital's new GME program affiliated with Tufts University School of Medicine. Dr. Smith is a board certified Psychiatrist by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry.
Dr. Smith worked as the sole psychiatrist in Washington County, Maine, for five years before pursuing other opportunities. He is currently clinically active at the State Psychiatric Hospital in Concord, New Hampshire. He serves on the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure and is the Clerkship Director of Psychiatry for the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Smith has spoken nationally and at several regional educational programs in New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine.
Dr. Smith discloses that he received a speaker fee for being a promotional speaker for Otsuka-Lundbeck, Incorporated.
