But here’s the real and raw truth I’ve always kept to myself until now:

As soon I got off the stage, I felt absolutely miserable.
That period of my life in 2011 (where I competed in 4 different competitions)
was the WORST year of my life.

It was a living nightmare. I would spend 12-16 weeks dieting and getting into incredible shape, and immediately after the show, I would regain 8-12 pounds of fat inside a week and my lower abs would disappear once again.

All this, despite my world revolving around my workouts, my meals, and my supplements.

I had zero social life as I had to be in bed for 10pm so I could be at the gym bright and early. I was the annoying person, that embarrassed the rest of the table, at the restaurant because it took me 15 minutes to put in an order. I needed to know about every single ingredient in the food, right?

I had mood swings like that of a teenage girl going through puberty. I had food obsessions. I lost my sex drive and stopped waking up with morning wood. And worst of all, it put incredible stress on my marriage.

What I forgot to mention was that 2011 – the year I won my pro card – was also my first year of marriage! It’s supposed to be your honeymoon period where you have sex 6x a week, you’re traveling together and your “love tanks” are always topped off…

…but for us…
I Thought We Were Going To Get Divorced!

Before I sat down to write this letter, I asked my wife, “Do you remember our first year of marriage when I competed 4 times?”

Here’s my wife’s response… and please keep in mind, my wife was very supportive but imagine being in HER position.

“Yes, it was so annoying! Your entire life revolved around your workouts and your food. And if you weren’t training or eating all you did was talk about food. Our conversations were so lame and superficial.

We didn’t have any random fun because everything had to be planned in advance. We even needed to book our flights around your workout times and could never go straight to the hotel. You would have to go to Whole Foods to get more tilapia or chicken. And you always had to bring your scale and travel with your food in tupperware containers, it was just annoying.

We couldn’t do our wine tours or wine nights and you were always moody. We hardly ever had sex, maybe once every 2 weeks and you had no energy. Our house stunk like taplipa to the point that our friends never even wanted to come over! And if something went wrong with your diet, all hell broke loose. If I wasn’t married to you, this could have been a deal breaker. Thank goodness this was just a season of your life and not your entire life.”

Today, my wife and I have a thriving marriage but back then, going to excessive extremes to get shredded almost ended my marriage, in the first year!
