What is a Domain?
• A domain name is a Web address, such as www.yourdomain.com, that is linked to an IP address (which represents a physical point on the Internet).
ICANN (The Internet CorporaFon for Assigned Names and Numbers) is the governing body that coordinates links between IP addresses and domain names across the Internet, so you can find Web sites by entering domain names instead of IP addresses into your Web browser.

• For example, think of an IP address as an address for a house or business, such as the White House. The address, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is comparable to an IP address, and the name you know it as, the White House, is comparable to a domain name.
Understanding Domain Names
• URL = Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web (www).
• Example URL: hTp://www.yourdomain.com – The first part of the address is called the protocol
• hTp:// = protocol, Vp:// = protocol – The second part is called a resource name and it specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. (Your Domain Name and Host)
• .yourdomain.
• A domain name consists of a top-level and a second-level domain.
• Top level (TLD) is the right of the dot .com, .org, .net, .co, many others
• Second Level (SLD) is the leV of the dot yourdomain.
• The second-level domain name is the “readable” part of the address and refers to the organizaFon or enFty behind the Internet address. Second-level domain names must be unique on the Internet and registered with an ICANN-accredited registrar.
Registering a Domain Name
• Registrar – Where You Buy a Domain like Go Daddy – A Registrar has access to a domain registry and the ability to provide domain
names to individuals and companies.
• Registrant – (You) – The Registrant is the individual or organizaFon that registers a domain name and holds the right to use it. The Registrant is considered the legal owner of a domain name.
• “Whois” lisFng contains informaFon associated with a domain name, such as its creaFon and expiraFon dates, the registrar of record, and various contacts (administraFve, technical, etc.). Whois data is collected when a domain name is registered and is public informaFon. The Whois informaFon appears whenever a person conducts a Whois search on a parFcular domain name.
Private Domains
• Can a Domain be Private?
• ICANN, guidelines state a registrar must add your domain and contact informaFon to the Whois directory when you register a domain.
• For a fee you can add Private RegistraFon to your domain. When you purchase private domain registraFon services, the WHO-IS directory will list the private registrar company’s, postal address and phone number instead of yours. Although the private registrar company is shown as the Registrant of your domain name registraFon, you sFll retain the full benefits of domain registraFon.
